1050  Quartz var. Smokey Scepter
Namaqualand, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
small-cabinet  6.7 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm

"The world's most popular quartz scepter".

One of many great specimens I have obtained from Marin Minerals (Mike Kiem) over the years. In some lifetime, I would like to focus on building a quartz collection. What it lacks in rarity is more than overcome by what it offers in beauty, with and endless parade of color and forms. And all of those forms are built on the simple and invarient geometeries of the quiartz crystal.

This one does it for me. The head is all terminations. It's easy to see: quartz is just a slow-moving life form.

One day I happened to Google "Quartz scpter", and I was tickled to see that the very first image of quartz scepter is this one. I claim, that as the #1 image in the results, this must be the Worlds Most Popular Quartz crystal. Apparently this is thanks to interest from the people with great teste at tumblr.com.
