223  Chrysocolla Kasompi Mine (Menda Mine; Kasompi Hill), Swambo, Central area, Shaba Cu belt, Shaba, Congo miniature 5 x 4 x 2.5 cm Pat: This is a gorgeous specimen of silica chrysocolla from the Kasompi Mine in the Congo, selected from the top 2 percent of the mine production for its color and form. Essentially what you are looking at is blue glass formed deep within the Earth thousands of years ago. What gives the glassy botryoidal layer its gorgeous color is the inclusion of copper in the mix. The thing that's fascinating about this rock is that the flow of blue silica glass almost completely covers the underlying rock, making this specimen look like a small staglamite. ----- Photos courtesy of / ©2004 Patricia B.
