285  Rhodochrosite on Manganite
N'Chwaning I mine, N'Chwaning mines, Kalahari manganese fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
miniature  4.5 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm

I'm in scalenohedral heaven! The crystals are not the largest (to about 3mm), but they are sharp, very gemmy, and of a gorgeous deep red, accented with black where the Manganite matrix almost pokes through. The display face is almost completely covered. I hope I never have to declare a favorite between the Sweet Home mine and N'Chwaning. As a collector of Rhodochrosites, these are surely the two premeire localities on the planet... that we know of yet, anyway!
