293  Mimetite San Pedro Corralitos, Mun. de Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico small-cabinet 6.2 x 3.9 x 3 cm Rob: These amazing specimens were found by sheer luck in 1968 when mineral dealer Benny Fenn explored part of this old mining complex, as detailed in this month's Nov/Dec issue of The Mineralogical Record. The mine had been worked for ages wihtout any specimen recovery operation and gods know what treasures have been lost; so this one pocket we are lucky to have seen at all. The habit is now classic : beautiful, lemon-yellow, botryoidal balls of choice yellow mimetite forming sculptural hillocks and , rarely, isolated spheres. Dr. Gary Hansen obtained these specimens directly from Benny Fenn soon after they were collected. I found one whole flat, literally unpicked over and unopened in 20 years and more, in his basement when I picked up the core collection. This is one of several suites in the Hansen collection (more to come!) that take us back to some of the unique finds of the 1960s and 70s ----- Photos courtesy of / ©2005 The Arkenstone label Mineral Occurances
