773  Rhodochrosite (balls)
N'Chwaning I mine, N'Chwaning mines, Kalahari manganese fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa

ex Helmut Bruckner #14
Geschichte Hans v. Binsbergen

I believe this to be an unexcelled miniature specimen from the finds of the late 1970's. The color is a deep orange-red, rather than the dusty pink which is far more common from the locality, and the surface of the spherical masses are made up of the complex terminations of scalenohedral microcrystals, free of damage. The matrix presents small lustrous black blades of manganite crystals, as well as the underlying flat-black of the massive manganite ore: the reason these crystals were uncovered.

Bruce Cairncross examined the specimen at the 2007 Munich show, and said that the specimen is one of a dozen or fewer recovered from a single pocket in 1977 or 78, and indeed, is one of the best of these. -
